How to back up and restore emails in cPanel webmail(Roundcube and Horde)
There is an in-built restore in cPanel that uses Roundcube and Horder to backup and restore emails in cPanel
Here are the steps for backing up and restoring emails in cPanel webmail:
Roundcube Interface

Backup
Log in to your webmail account using the Roundcube interface.
Click on the “Email Accounts” icon.
Select the email account you want to back up.
Choose the location you want to save the email.
Select the desired email and click on the More icon to download
You cannot download many emails on Roundcube at once, we recommend using Horde to back up an entire folder or account.
Restore
Using the Roundcube interface, log in to your webmail account
Click on the “Email Accounts” icon.
Choose the email account you want to restore.
Click on More
Choose Import messages:
Choose the backup file you want to be imported and click Upload:
Once successfully imported, you will be notified with a pop-up message
Horde Interface:
Backup
- Using the Horde interface, log in to your webmail account
- Click on the “Email Accounts” icon.
- Open the email you want to back up
- Select the plus icon at the top of the email to Save. The email will be also saved in .eml format in this case:
To save multiple emails in the inbox, sent, etc. folder
- Right-click on the folder you want to backup
- Select Export option
- You can either select the MBOX or zipped MBOX formal for the backup file. If you just want to store emails, the zipped option is preferable as it will be smaller in size.
Restore
- Log in to your webmail account using the Horde interface.
- Click on the Email Accounts icon.
- Right-click on the folder you want to upload the emails to and choose Import:
- Select the format of the backup file(MBOX or zipped MBOX)and click OK:
- You will get a notification the emails have been uploaded from the backup file to the
- account.
It’s important to regularly back up your emails to ensure that you don’t lose any important data in case of a system failure or other issues. It’s also, a good idea to keep multiple copies of your backups in different locations, such as on an external hard drive or in cloud storage, to protect against data loss due to hardware failure or other issues.
